Why I Deserve Mother's Day

To be completely honest, I woke up this morning feeling a bit melancholy. I know women who avoid church on Mother's Day. Some, from what I understand, feel that they don't deserve it. That's kind of how I was feeling this morning. No real reason why, it's just the feeling that came over me. People like my mom deserve Mother's Day. Someday I would like to be of her caliber.

This afternoon, Q came down from her bedroom telling us about a huge spider (really the offspring of a huge spider that we met a few months ago) that was hanging out directly over her bed. She told me about it, and then went to tell her dad. I think she was hoping he'd do something to help it meet its demise.

I could hear her downstairs explain to him, "Remember the huge spider that was at the top of my stairs that mom sucked up with the vacuum cleaner?"

Ahhh! At last a reason why I deserve Mother's Day! For one moment in my daughter's life, I was the hero! Yay, me!!! Watch out! I'm wicked with a vacuum.

Ew. At our house the story would have been, "Remember the huge spider that made mom pack up and move to a new house?" At minimum, I'd have needed a new vacuum bag (changed by SOMEONE ELSE) after sucking up a spider. And probably some therapy as well.

Aw! None of us are as good at everything as we wish we could be; but still, our efforts and achievements (seven kids! who love you! and think you're great!) are worth acknowledging one little day per year. It's like a birthday; you get the cake because you are, because you were born, because the day celebrates you. And today, you get the hugs and the smiles because you're a mom. You don't have to be perfect just to have a bunch of people who love you and want you to know it. :)

I happen to think you are pretty wonderful even when you're not perfect. LOVE YA!

Julie--You are so wonderful--and not just because you kill HUGE spiders. You are so kind, and friendly. And there is rarlyt a time when I don't see a smile on your face. I feel blessed to know you and your family. Happy Mothers Day!

There is no doubt in my mind that as your kids reflect back on their childhoods, there will be many, many more moments than the Spider Incident™ where they remember you as The Hero.
